Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing (PHWFF) began in 2005 serving wounded military service members at Walter Reed Army Medical Center returning from combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. The volunteers taught the wounded soldiers to tie flies and there was true therapy realized in that experience. Since then, PHWFF has expanded nationwide and the program follows the healing veterans as they are dismissed to their hospitals, transition units, clinics or bases around the country.
The PHWFF Program advances the veteran from tying flies to casting a fly rod and the ultimate goal is for the soldier to catch a fish! This brings their newly learned skills to fruition. These heroes are very vocal and very appreciative about how healing these experiences are for them. Typically volunteers host or sponsor fly fishing trips to provide these veterans opportunities to catch fish…..and heal.
We have hosted PHWFF trips in Pagosa Springs since 2014 and look forward to our September 2017 trip! The tangible change you see on these soldier’s faces as they spend time in Pagosa and in her incredible waters is something us volunteers look forward to every year. Working with this program has been one of the most meaningful things I have ever done. You can judge the success by the smiling faces of our heroes shown below!
